13. Custom Stained Glass: From Idea to Installation

Curious about commissioning a custom stained glass piece for your home? This guide will walk you through the entire process — from the initial design to the finished window — so you’ll know exactly what to expect from us!

Why commission a stained glass window?

Completely customizable
When you commission a window, you get to choose everything—the colours, textures, style, and design elements. Whether you're drawn to soft, muted palettes or bold, vibrant hues, we’ll work together to create a piece that reflects your style and fits seamlessly into your space.

Adding value and interest to your home's architecture
Stained glass adds a level detail that sets your home apart. It can become a standout feature in real estate listings and spark interest among potential buyers. A custom window is not only a design statement — it’s a unique, lasting investment in your home’s character and value. Stained Glass windows are the perfect combination of art and architecture.

Invites light into your space while providing privacy
Install stained glass to enhance privacy without blocking out natural light. Whether it's for a bathroom, front entry, or stairwell, stained glass allows light to pour in while still allowing natural light to shine through. No need for blinds or curtains, simply enjoy the beautiful coloured light and privacy in one.

What to expect when you commission a custom stained glass window

Stained Glass window building methods date back to the 7th century! Many of the same principles in the process are still used today with the addition of some modern tools.

We guide our clients through a three-part process: Design, Build, and Install.

First, we collaborate on a custom design that reflects the client’s style and vision. Once the design is approved, we help select the colours and glass that bring the concept to life. After finalizing these details, we provide a detailed estimate based on the chosen design and materials. With the estimate approved, we move into the building phase. When the window is complete, clients can choose to pick it up from our store or add optional installation services for a seamless finish.

How much does a custom stained glass window cost?
We work on a time-and-materials basis. See our current labour rate here. Material costs typically range depending on quantity needed and style. Smaller windows aren't always faster to create; design complexity plays a bigger role. Windows with a high number of cut pieces or intricate curves require more time and precision, which increases the overall cost. To help manage your budget, we recommend selecting simpler designs with fewer curved shapes, as they’re more efficient to produce while still offering beautiful results.

How is stained glass built?
Stained glass is entirely handcrafted: every piece in a stained glass window is assembled by hand, not machine. While computer programs assist with design scaling and layout, the rest of the process is done manually. Each piece of glass is carefully cut, ground, wrapped in metal, soldered, framed, finished with patina or putty, then cleaned and polished.

The result is a one of a kind window built to last for centuries—an heirloom piece that can be passed down for generations.

Installation Services
Installation is available as an add-on to our design and build services.

Yes — we can install your custom stained glass window directly into your home using traditional glazing methods for wood frames. This approach preserves the heritage and craftsmanship of the window. If your home has vinyl window frames, we can still install your piece using high-quality silicone or sealant methods to ensure a secure, lasting fit.

Not sure what kind of frame you have? We're happy to help you figure that out during the consultation process.

How to Request a Custom Stained Glass Design
If you're interested in commissioning a custom stained glass window, here’s how to get started in three steps!

  • Have a design idea in mind. It’s helpful to know the general style you’re drawn to whether it’s geometric, floral, abstract, or traditional.

  • Gather inspiration. Share any reference photos, colour palettes, or sketches that capture the look and feel you’re envisioning.

  • Fill out our online custom request form. See our past projects here! Be sure to include your inspiration images and your ideal timeline.
