Your New Tool Box:

Glass Cutter

The glass cutter is your primary tool for shaping glass. It is used to score the glass, indicating where it should break. Read our recent blog called "Get to Know Your Toyo" for in-depth information on this tool!

Grozing Pliers

Grozing pliers are used to remove small pieces of glass near the edge when they become too difficult to grasp by hand. When Jessica, our owner, first began working with stained glass, she only had a pair of grozing pliers! That was until she discovered the next tool...

Running Pliers

The next essential tool for your kit is the Running Pliers. This tool is perfect for breaking along long lines and gentle curves. It’s a favourite among beginners because it makes breaking glass effortless! When you are using this tool, ensure that the screw is always point up towards the sky!

Grinder

We’re often asked, "Can I use sandpaper instead of a grinder?" Sandpaper is designed for wood and would leave unsightly scratches on your glass! Glass should be ground using water and a diamond pad. While a diamond hand sanding pad can work, an electric grinder is much faster and more efficient. It’s a worthwhile investment that, with proper care and maintenance, will last for many years!

Soldering Iron
FX-601 Soldering Iron
A soldering iron is used to melt the solder that holds your project together. The two most popular irons in the art glass industry are the Hakko FX-601 and the Weller 100 Watt iron. The Hakko features a temperature control dial on the iron itself, while the Weller’s temperature is regulated by the type of tip inserted into the iron.

Chemicals

The main chemicals used in stained glass work are flux, patina, flux neutralizer, and polish. Each serves a specific purpose and plays a crucial role in your project. These chemicals are primarily used during the soldering and cleaning processes. They are safe to handle when used with the proper personal protective equipment (PPE). See our "How to Apply Patina" blog to learn how to finish your stained glass project!

Copper Foil

Copper foil is a thin tape made of copper that wraps around each glass piece. The solder bonds to the foil, which is what holds your stained glass project together. There are various styles and widths of foil available, allowing you to choose the best fit for your glass width or desired look for your project!
